About this position

Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a postdoctoral position in aqueous rechargeable zinc-ion batteries. This opportunity is based in the Department of Industrial and Materials Science, within the Division of Materials and Manufacture, in Gothenburg, Sweden. The research group is internationally oriented and focuses on functional materials, electrode processing, and high-performance batteries, with strong collaborations across academia and industry in Europe.

The research project is part of an EU-level collaboration involving six partners from Austria, Germany, and Sweden. The main goal is to develop advanced zinc-based batteries for stationary energy storage, a critical component for the integration of renewable energy sources. The project addresses the limitations of lithium-ion batteries for grid-scale applications, focusing on cost, sustainability, and material availability.

As a postdoc, you will contribute to the synthesis of high-performance cathode materials, binder development for zinc-ion batteries, and the advancement of sustainable electrode manufacturing technologies. You will fabricate aqueous rechargeable zinc-ion battery cells, which will be sent to international collaborators for assembly into battery packs for practical use. The position also involves supervising master’s and/or PhD students and collaborating with both academic and industrial partners.

The position is a full-time, temporary employment for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. Chalmers offers a dynamic and inspiring work environment, comprehensive employee benefits, and support for international staff, including Swedish language courses. The university is committed to gender equality and diversity through initiatives like the GENIE project.

Eligibility: Applicants must have a doctoral degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in Materials Science, Polymer Chemistry, or Mechanical Engineering by the time of employment. Experience in zinc-ion battery and pouch cell fabrication is required. Strong English communication skills are essential. Additional experience in sustainable electrode processing and binder development, and a doctoral degree obtained within the last three years, are advantageous. Physical presence in Sweden and a valid residence permit are required.

Application: Applications must be submitted in English via the online application form, including a comprehensive CV, publication list, teaching experience, and a personal letter outlining research background and goals. The deadline for applications is January 25, 2026. For further information, contact Associate Professor Jinhua Sun at [email protected].
