About this position
BBSRC Sponsored Postdoc Position at the University of Sheffield in the School of Biosciences.
This Research Associate role joins Professor Matt Johnson’s group to investigate how bioenergetic supercomplexes promote electron transfer in respiration and photosynthesis. The project focuses on bacterial, mitochondrial, and chloroplast electron transfer systems, with particular interest in how transient encounter complexes form between soluble electron carrier proteins and membrane-integral complexes.
The work combines single-molecule atomic force microscopy (smAFM) with complementary biophysical and structural approaches, including mass photometry, microscale thermophoresis, spectroscopy, cryo-electron microscopy, and CRISPR-Cas9 engineering in Chlamydomonas. The post also involves purification of membrane protein supercomplexes from yeast mitochondria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, spinach chloroplasts, and Chlamydomonas thylakoids, plus collaboration with international partners and computational colleagues.
This is a three-year BBSRC-funded postdoc starting in October 2026. The role is based in a strong interdisciplinary environment with access to the Imagine: Imaging Life facility, controlled-environment plant and algal growth facilities, and an active community in photosynthesis, bacterial bioenergetics, and structural biology.
Ideal candidates should have strong motivation and relevant experience in biophysics, membrane protein biochemistry, structural biology, photosynthesis, or related molecular biology. The post includes research, publication, conference presentation, lab support, student supervision, and contribution to grant reporting and future funding applications.
Apply via the University of Sheffield postdoc opportunity page.
