About this position
Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is advertising a 3-year Postdoc in causal machine learning and reinforcement learning within the Faculty of Science, embedded in the Quantitative Data Analytics (QDA) group.
The research sits at the intersection of machine learning and statistics, with a focus on algorithmic improvements for causal inference and reinforcement learning. The work will be applied in health-related settings through two major projects: Stress in Action (NWO-funded) and MINMED (ZonMW-funded). These projects involve stress research using wearable data, ecological momentary assessments, questionnaires, and causal effects of interventions in elderly care from observational data.
The postdoc will collaborate with academic partners including Amsterdam UMC, Erasmus MC, and the University of Groningen, and will participate in the QDA group led by Mark Hoogendoorn, the Biostatistics group at Erasmus MC led by Dimitris Rizopoulos, and Laura Bringmann’s intensive longitudinal data lab at the University of Groningen.
Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant area, prior experience in machine learning or statistics, preferably with health applications, strong programming skills, and experience with PyTorch and/or TensorFlow. The role also includes publishing in top AI/ML conferences, contributing to project activities, and some teaching/supervision duties.
The position is based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Salary is paid according to university scales, starting at €3,706/month in year one and rising to €5,760/month by year four on a full-time basis. The appointment is initially for 3 years.
Deadline: 27 September 2026. Apply through the vacancy portal with a CV and cover letter; email applications are not accepted.
