About this position
Postdoctoral Research Associate opening at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the Computational Multiphase Transport Laboratory (CMTL) for research in computational fluid dynamics, multiphase flow, droplet dynamics, and icing.
The project focuses on high-fidelity computational modeling of droplet impact, droplet–droplet interactions, and droplet interactions with solid surfaces, with applications to aircraft icing and wind-turbine icing. Research topics include droplet deformation, coalescence, breakup, splashing, heat transfer, phase change/freezing, and interactions with cold surfaces.
The successful candidate will develop and apply advanced numerical methods for interfacial multiphase flows, analyze governing physical mechanisms, compare simulations with experimental data, and contribute to model development and large-scale numerical simulations. The role also includes opportunities to collaborate with experimental and computational researchers, publish in leading journals, and mentor graduate and undergraduate students.
Eligibility highlights: Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computational Science, or a closely related field; strong CFD and multiphase/interfacial flow background; experience with droplets, free-surface flows, phase change, heat transfer, or related transport phenomena; strong programming and scientific computing skills; peer-reviewed publications and independent research ability. Experience with OpenFOAM, Basilisk, VOF, adaptive mesh refinement, HPC, or droplet solidification/freezing is highly desirable.
How to apply: Email a CV, a brief research statement, and 2–3 references to Prof. Aswin Gnanaskandan. Use the subject line “Postdoctoral Position – Droplet Dynamics and Icing.” Review begins immediately and continues until the position is filled.
Location: Worcester, Massachusetts, United States.

Postdoctoral Research Associate position at Worcester Polytechnic Institute; funding details such as salary or stipend are not stated in the post.
What's required
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computational Science, or a closely related field. A strong background in computational fluid dynamics and multiphase/interfacial flows is required, along with experience in numerical modeling of droplets, free-surface flows, phase change, heat transfer, or related transport phenomena. Strong programming and scientific computing skills are expected, and a record of peer-reviewed publications plus the ability to conduct independent research and communicate results effectively are required. Experience with OpenFOAM and/or Basilisk is highly desirable; interface-capturing methods such as VOF, adaptive mesh refinement, high-performance computing, and simulations involving droplet impact and solidification/freezing are advantageous.
How to apply
Send a CV, a brief statement of research experience and interests, and the names/contact information of 2–3 references to Prof. Aswin Gnanaskandan. Include “Postdoctoral Position – Droplet Dynamics and Icing” in the subject line. Applications are reviewed immediately until the position is filled.
