About this position
Postdoctoral position at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Department of Maritime and Transport Technology / Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
The project focuses on data-driven autonomous shipping, port operations, maritime transport systems, and logistics coordination. The postdoc will develop model-based and data-driven methods to support the integration of autonomous vessels into maritime and port ecosystems, using vessel, sensor, environmental, and traffic data. Research topics include operational and nautical complexity, human–automation interaction, Concepts of Operations (CONOPS) for navigation and energy management, port-call optimisation, stakeholder collaboration, agent-based modelling, scenario analysis, and decision-support for autonomous short-sea shipping.
The position is supervised by Yusong Pang and Rudy R. Negenborn and is embedded in two co-funded European research projects with more than 20 industry and university partners. The projects aim to develop a living lab for a green and autonomous corridor and accelerate adoption of autonomous ships through open innovation.
Eligibility: PhD degree completed or expected soon in mechanical engineering, maritime technology, operations research, systems and control, or a related field. Strong data engineering and quantitative modelling skills are required; experience in autonomous shipping, port logistics, or decision-support systems is an advantage. Good English communication and writing skills are needed.
Funding and terms: 3-year temporary postdoc, 38 hours/week, salary range €3706–€5760 under the Dutch Universities collective agreement. Benefits include pension, flexible working, leave hours, training opportunities, and partially paid parental leave.
