About this position

The Environmental Biotechnology cluster in the Industrial Biotechnology department at KTH Royal Institute of Technology is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to work on anaerobic processes for bioplastic valorization. The project centers on the co-fermentation of food waste and bioplastics to produce value-added bioproducts such as volatile fatty acids and biogas, with attention to the full pathway from bioproduction to microbial ecology analysis and downstream separation and purification.

This is a research-focused postdoc position within a collaborative environment involving academic and industrial partners. The successful candidate will contribute to EU and nationally funded projects, publish research articles, prepare technical reports, and present results to scientific and general audiences. The role may also include teaching and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree, or an equivalent foreign degree, in Environmental Biotechnology, Environmental Engineering, Bioengineering, or a closely related field by the time the employment decision is made. Essential experience includes anaerobic bioreactor design, operation and optimisation, wastewater treatment and/or other waste streams, bioplastic analysis, and microbial ecology tools. Strong written and spoken English, scientific publishing experience, independence, critical analysis, and cooperative skills are all required.

Preferred qualifications include a PhD awarded within the last three years, awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues with a focus on gender equality, and the ability to teach and supervise students. The position is temporary and full time for up to two years, based in Stockholm, Sweden, at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. The application deadline is 2026-08-14.
