About this position

TU Delft is advertising a Postdoc position in the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences for research on validating a digital twin for evaluating emission reduction strategies for inland shipping. The project is part of the NWO-funded PATH2ZERO initiative, which focuses on pathways toward zero-emission and robust inland shipping.

The research uses real-world vessel data, including AIS data, hydrodynamic data, and infrastructure data, together with agent-based modelling, maritime traffic simulation tools such as OpenTNSim, energy consumption estimates, and emission algorithms. The goal is to build and validate a data-driven virtual representation of inland waterway transport that can assess the impact of technologies, policies, and infrastructure strategies on emissions and logistics performance.

Modelled regions include the Rotterdam–Basel corridor, the Rotterdam–Antwerp/Gent corridor, and the Port of Rotterdam region. The work is interdisciplinary and involves collaboration with project stakeholders and researchers to translate research outcomes into practice and support decision-making for zero-emission inland shipping.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in Transportation, Logistics, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Maritime Engineering, or a related field; strong modelling skills; experience with big data analytics and Python; and proven experience with agent-based modelling. Collaboration with scientific and industrial partners is also important.

Funding and conditions: 2-year temporary contract, 38 hours per week, externally financed. Salary is listed as €3546–€5538, with standard Dutch university benefits including pension, leave hours, training opportunities, and partial parental leave.
