About this position

Postdoc opening at the Department of Biochemistry, University of Zurich for a project on drug development for Alzheimer's disease. The position is part of the Caflisch group and focuses on a multidisciplinary preclinical drug-discovery programme spanning computational molecular design, experimental biochemistry, laboratory biology, and in vivo compound validation.

The successful candidate will play a central role in the group's in vitro and in vivo workflow, with emphasis on blood-brain barrier models, drug penetration studies, histology, brain tissue processing, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, fluorescence/confocal imaging, ELISA, western blotting, mammalian cell culture, microglial phagocytosis assays, and flow cytometry/FACS. The project aims to optimize a drug candidate for improved blood-brain barrier penetration, stability, efficacy, pharmacokinetics, and safety in in vitro and in vivo models.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in biology, neuroscience, biomedicine, or a related field; strong hands-on experience with BBB research and quantitative analysis; solid histology and microscopy skills; experience with LC-MS is a strong advantage; and experience with cell-based assays and FACS is beneficial. Applicants should be independent, well organized, careful with documentation, and comfortable working in a collaborative team environment.

Application: send a CV and a motivation letter in English, grouped into a single PDF file, via the UZH application portal. The role starts on 1 October 2026 and is a fixed-term appointment for one year with the possibility of renewal. Location: Zurich, Switzerland.
