About this position

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) is offering a postdoctoral position in electronic structure and magnetism in quantum materials within its Theory group in Grenoble, France. The ILL is an international research facility at the forefront of neutron science and technology, hosting one of the world’s most intense neutron sources and a large, collaborative scientific community. This postdoc sits in the Science Division and connects theory directly with experiment, especially through neutron-scattering research.

The project focuses on ab-initio electronic structure and spectroscopic calculations in strongly correlated quantum materials, with special attention to magnetic and multiferroic systems. The successful candidate will work on specific compounds in close collaboration with experimentalists, using ab-initio methods to develop effective models that explain observed properties. A major emphasis will be placed on interpreting neutron diffraction data, including magnetic structure and magnetic excitations. There is also scope to contribute to databases on magnetic systems for future machine-learning applications.

The Theory group supports ILL scientists and users while also pursuing its own neutron-related research. Its work spans strong correlation in condensed matter, biophysics, analytical methods, Monte Carlo simulation, and ab-initio calculations. This position is therefore well suited to a researcher interested in computational condensed matter physics, magnetism, spectroscopy, and theory-experiment collaboration in an international environment.

Eligibility is targeted at candidates holding a PhD in condensed matter physics or quantum chemistry obtained less than four years ago. Applicants should have a strong background in quantum mechanics, practical knowledge of electronic-structure methods such as DFT and wave-function approaches, and experience with Linux. Knowledge of group theory or crystallography is an advantage, and familiarity with artificial intelligence is welcome.

The post is based in Grenoble, with a deadline of 2026-10-04. The ILL highlights stable postdoctoral employment, a multicultural scientific setting, generous social benefits, relocation assistance, a productivity bonus, language courses, and subsidies for transport and other activities. Applications should be submitted via the provided online link; the contact email listed is for information only and not for sending applications.
