About this position

The Max Planck Graduate Center for Quantum Materials (MPGC-QM) is inviting applications for multiple fully funded PhD positions in quantum materials. The program is hosted by the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research and involves a network of five Max Planck Institutes across Dresden, Hamburg, Halle, and Stuttgart, with additional joint PhD projects with Oxford University.

This is a structured, English-speaking doctoral program focused on cutting-edge research in physics, materials science, and related areas. The post highlights access to world-class research facilities, interdisciplinary collaboration, individual supervision and mentoring, and additional support for scientific meetings and trainings. Tuition costs are waived for the PhD positions.

Eligibility is broad but competitive: applicants should have an MSc or equivalent degree with a strong background in physics, chemistry, mathematics, or computer science, plus some knowledge of solid-state science and excellent English language skills. A first-class four-year BSc or equivalent may qualify for the fast-track option.

The application deadline is 2026-12-08. Applications must be submitted through the online portal only. For questions, the post directs applicants to the MPGC Coordination Office at [email protected].
