About this position

Postdoc opportunity at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Department of Electrical Sustainable Energy / DC Systems, Energy Conversion and Storage group.

This postdoctoral project focuses on EV charging, second-life batteries, DC traction grids, urban microgrids, and energy management. The research is part of the EU-funded GRID4CITY project under the Driving Urban Transitions (DUT) Partnerships program call 2025–26.

The successful candidate will study repurposing end-of-first-life electric bus and IMC batteries as second-life stationary and mobile energy storage systems, with emphasis on battery degradation, cell-to-cell variation, diagnostics, state-of-health estimation, disassembly, reconfiguration, safety, reliability, and lifetime. The role also includes analyzing how traction grids can support high-power charging for zero-emission construction sites, and developing optimal sizing and energy management strategies for chargers and mobile battery storage under traction and AC grid constraints.

The postdoc will contribute to two pilots: a traction-to-building microgrid integrating PV, second-life batteries, regenerative braking energy, and smart energy management; and mobile charging solutions for construction machinery using the trolleybus network as an energy source. The position also involves coordination with EU partners, organizing tasks and meetings, dissemination, and work across pilots in the Netherlands and Poland.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline, strong background in batteries and battery management systems, experience with battery SoX modeling, thermal management, lifetime estimation, and experimental setups, plus excellent English. Experience with AC/DC grids, EV charging, project coordination, and budget/task management is preferred.

The contract is temporary for 12 months with a possible extension of 23 months. Salary and benefits follow the Dutch university collective agreement. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and the deadline is 6 October 2026 at 23:59 CET.
