About this position
We are looking for a PhD candidate in photonic integration and qubit hardware development for quantum computing at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Netherlands. The position sits within the Center for Quantum Materials and Technology (QT/e), in the ultracold atom laboratory of the Center for Quantum Materials and Technology, and focuses on experimental work at the intersection of quantum computing, integrated photonics, and neutral-atom hardware.
The project is part of the KAT-1 QDNL program on hybrid quantum computing and also contributes to the European Photonics for Quantum (P4Q) Pilot Line, a major consortium effort aimed at accelerating quantum photonic technologies toward scalable manufacturing. TU/e acts as an end user in this consortium, evaluating next-generation photonic chips in a strontium-based neutral-atom quantum processor (Sapphire) based on optical tweezer arrays of individually controlled atoms.
The selected PhD researcher will test and integrate advanced photonic chips into the experimental setup, benchmark their performance under realistic operating conditions, and translate end-user requirements into feedback for chip developers. The technical focus includes single-qubit control, atom imaging and readout, site-selective Rydberg excitation for two-qubit gates, optical coherence, switching performance, crosstalk, stability, and scalability. The project also includes quantum simulations for specific use cases and close collaboration with other PhD candidates, postdocs, quantum engineers, MSc students, and principal investigators.
The broader research environment includes the ultracold atom team at QT/e working on both strontium and rubidium platforms, collaboration with the University of Amsterdam and other partners in the P4Q and KAT-1 networks, and integration into the wider QDNL quantum research network and Brainport Eindhoven hub. The topic is highly experimental and suited to candidates interested in quantum mechanics, photonic device integration, and scalable quantum-hardware development.
Eligibility highlights include a master’s degree in experimental physics or a closely related field, preferably with hands-on experience in cold atoms, lasers and optics, integrated photonics, and/or quantum computation. Strong English proficiency is required, along with a research-oriented mindset, teamwork, and motivation to contribute to teaching and thesis supervision. The appointment is full time for four years, with an intermediate assessment after nine months and some teaching duties during the contract.
Funding is provided through an EU-funded project, with a full-time salary in accordance with Dutch university collective agreements.
