About this position

Postdoc in Evolution and Public Health at the University of Montpellier, France.

This 24-month postdoctoral position is hosted at the Institut des Sciences de l'Évolution de Montpellier (ISEM, UMR 5554), within the EEC team (Ecology & Evolution of Communities) on the Triolet campus. The team is international and active in host-parasite interactions, experimental evolution, fieldwork, ecological and evolutionary theory, and data analysis. Working language in team meetings is English.

The postdoc will work directly with Dr Pleuni Pennings, an evolutionary biologist focused on population genetics and drug resistance evolution in viruses, bacteria, and malaria. The project is supported by the region Occitanie and aims to uncover the rules shaping drug resistance dynamics across pathogens using modeling from ecology, evolution, and epidemiology together with public surveillance and genomic databases.

The successful candidate will choose two of three possible subprojects. These include: resistance to antimalarials in P. falciparum using public sequencing data and phylogenetic approaches; diversity of resistance in E. coli populations using the Enterobase genomic database; and reusable machine learning models to predict drug resistance by aligning genomes to a standardized reference pan-genome. The work combines evolutionary biology, genomic epidemiology, bioinformatics, and quantitative analysis, with clear relevance to antimicrobial resistance and public health.

The salary is a net monthly amount of €2,200 to €2,380. The contract is full-time and temporary for 24 months. Applicants should have a PhD or equivalent in biology or bioinformatics and experience in bioinformatics, sequence analysis, and programming in Python, R, or similar languages. Skills in modeling, simulations, evolutionary or population genetics, statistics, scientific writing, and literature reading are welcome.
