About this position

Postdoc opportunity in Experimental Aerodynamics at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), Netherlands. The Aerodynamics group in the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to advance experimental techniques for large-scale 3D particle tracking, flow field measurements, and flow visualization. The project focuses on transforming measurements into aerodynamic forces by pressure and friction, with applications in industrial wind tunnels for the aerospace sector.

The research environment is highly experimental and interdisciplinary. The group works on advanced non-intrusive measurement techniques such as Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), InfraRed Thermography, and Background Oriented Schlieren, and has access to state-of-the-art wind tunnels, including low-speed, transonic, supersonic, and hypersonic facilities. The successful candidate will also oversee the use of helium-filled soap bubbles as flow tracers up to the supersonic regime.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in aerospace/mechanical engineering or applied physics; demonstrated research ability in experimental fluid mechanics; competence in flow measurement techniques and PIV; familiarity with optics, lasers, image processing, and statistical analysis; experience with CFD or machine learning for fluid flows; strong English communication; ability to supervise students or early-stage researchers; and hands-on laboratory and programming skills (Matlab and/or Python).

Funding and conditions: 2-year temporary postdoc contract, 38 hours per week, salary range €3706–€5760 under the Dutch Universities collective agreement, with pension, flexible working, leave, training opportunities, and partially paid parental leave. The project is EU funded (AEROSQIN, HE/ERC).

What's required
