About this position

TU Delft is recruiting a Postdoc in Explainable Human Behavior and Affective Predictions within the Interactive Intelligence Group in the Department of Intelligent Systems, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS), in the Netherlands.

This project sits at the intersection of computer science, psychology, cognitive science, and electrical engineering. The research aims to advance explainable AI for human-AI interaction by studying how multimodal AI systems can understand, explain, and communicate predictions about human behaviour. The work focuses on automatic perception of situational interest and state epistemic curiosity, with possible applications in education, healthcare, and immersive augmented/mixed reality environments.

Possible research directions include vision-language models, multimodal large language models, mechanistic interpretability of multimodal models, concept-based explanations grounded in affect and behaviour theory, and multimodal sensing using vision, audio, and physiological signals. The project also emphasizes interactive explanation as a dialogue process, including real-time user questioning and deployment in dynamic contexts.

The successful candidate will be embedded in a collaborative research environment and will also participate in the Hybrid Intelligence Centre, a Dutch consortium focused on hybrid intelligence. The position is a three-year temporary contract (initial one year plus two-year extension subject to performance), with 38-40 hours per week and salary/benefits according to the Dutch Universities collective agreement.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD degree is required or must be completed before the start date; applicants should have a relevant track record in generative AI and machine learning, affective computing, human-computer interaction or collaborative AI, and/or interaction or experimental design. Strong communication skills, a proactive attitude, and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team are expected.

How to apply: submit the application online via AcademicTransfer, including a CV and motivational letter. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the deadline of 9 October 2026.
