About this position

PhD opportunity at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering on cognitive guidance in XR to improve independent mobility for people with disabilities.

This interdisciplinary project combines extended reality (XR), virtual/augmented/mixed reality, cognitive science, decision making, motor learning, artificial intelligence, machine learning, wearable technologies, human-computer interaction, human factors, and accessibility/inclusive design. The research aims to design and evaluate immersive XR experiences that help users safely learn navigation skills in realistic environments such as public transportation hubs, university campuses, and airports.

The project will study how different external stimuli and repeated exposure affect decision making and motor behavior, then develop real-time guidance systems using visual, auditory, or haptic feedback. You will work with behavioral, physiological, and cognitive data to personalize training, monitor progress, and adapt support to users’ changing needs. The work includes user studies, algorithm development, immersive/augmented reality prototyping, and validation in real-world settings.

Applicants should have an MSc in a relevant field such as Human-Computer Interaction, Cognitive Science, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Rehabilitation Engineering, Industrial Design, or Biomedical Engineering. Strong programming skills, experience with human-participant experiments, English proficiency, and interest in cognitive modeling or behavioral analysis are expected. Experience with Unity/Unreal, AI/ML, human factors, accessibility, or motor learning is a plus.

The position is a 4-year PhD employment with a salary of €3204–€4051 gross per month, plus holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus. TU Delft also mentions health insurance discounts and relocation support for moving to the Netherlands.
