About this position

Postdoctoral position in finite element modelling and testing of wooden veneer structures at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden.

This postdoc is based at the Division of Structural Engineering, Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, and focuses on bio-based structural materials for innovative and sustainable wind power infrastructure. The project addresses the wind industry’s “blades-to-landfill” challenge by developing high-performance wind turbine blades made from wood veneers.

The research combines manufacturing and structural experimentation with numerical simulation. The successful candidate will help develop a manufacturing process for complex, aerodynamically precise blade geometries using biobased materials, then use finite element modelling and related simulations to assess structural and aerodynamic performance under operational loads. The role also includes hands-on fabrication and assembly of veneer-based blade prototypes, structural validation, and collaboration across disciplines linking material mechanics and wind turbine performance.

The position is hosted within a strong research environment in structural engineering at Chalmers, where the department works on sustainable built and natural environments, including timber and biobased structures. The postdoc is intended for researchers interested in computational engineering, wood mechanics, structural testing, and sustainable materials for renewable energy applications.

Eligibility requirements include a doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering, Wood Technology, Structural Mechanics/Engineering, or an equivalent field. Applicants must have excellent English communication skills and demonstrated experience in advanced numerical modelling of structures/materials and/or experimental structural testing. Teaching experience is expected to some extent, and experience in wood mechanics, advanced forming processes, or structural dynamics is considered advantageous.

The appointment is a temporary full-time postdoctoral position for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension. The role requires physical presence throughout the employment period and a valid residence permit by the start date. The application must be submitted in English via the online form, with PDF attachments only. The deadline is 16 August 2026.
