About this position
Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, invites applications for a postdoctoral position in Integrated Solid-State Photonics. This opportunity is situated within the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience, specifically the Division of Photonics, which is renowned for advancing quantum technology, nanoscience, photonics, and future electronic systems. The research environment is vibrant, international, and offers direct access to world-class nanofabrication facilities.
The Integrated Solid-State Photonics Lab is a newly established group focused on developing next-generation photonic integrated circuit (PIC) technologies using active solid-state materials, particularly rare-earth-doped materials. The aim is to realize high-performance classical and quantum light sources, enabling new photonic functionalities across a broad spectral range from UV to mid-infrared. Applications span classical optical systems, quantum technologies, optical metrology, sensing, and data communication.
Your postdoctoral research will be embedded in the Meta-PIX Excellence Center, funded by the Swedish Research Council, dedicated to integrated meta-photonics with applications ranging from high-capacity optical interconnects to quantum simulations. The long-term goal is to develop rare-earth-doped PIC technology for compact, high-performance, and scalable laser systems suitable for atomic clocks, optical metrology, sensing, and quantum technologies. Research activities include photonic integration of high optical quality rare-earth materials, nanofabrication, device-level design and characterization, and studying light-matter integration in nanophotonic systems.
As a postdoctoral researcher, you will lead and conduct research in collaboration with others, develop and expand your scientific expertise, work both independently and as part of a team, and contribute new research ideas to advance integrated photonics. You will also supervise master’s and/or PhD students and may engage in teaching at the undergraduate or master’s level. The position is meritorious for future roles in academia, industry, or the public sector.
Chalmers offers a collaborative and inclusive research environment that supports scientific independence, critical thinking, and teamwork. Employees enjoy comprehensive benefits, including opportunities for scientific leadership, mentoring junior researchers, and career advancement. The university is committed to gender balance, equality, and inclusion, with initiatives such as the GENIE project. Swedish language courses are available for non-native speakers to help you settle in.
The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. Physical presence is required throughout the employment, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date. The application deadline is May 31, 2026.
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree or equivalent foreign degree by the time of employment decision. Demonstrated research experience and ability are required. Candidates should have a collaborative mindset, be self-driven, eager to learn, and possess good analytical problem-solving skills. Some teaching experience and potential within research and education are expected. Preferred qualifications include a doctoral degree obtained within the last three years, expertise in photonics, optics, nanotechnology, or experimental solid-state physics, experience in building optical set-ups, photonic device design and characterization, and familiarity with photonic integration software tools such as Lumerical or COMSOL.
To apply, prepare your application in English and attach as PDF files. Include a comprehensive CV with publication list, details of teaching experience, and a personal letter outlining previous research and future goals. Use the application form link provided. Incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. References will be requested after the interview. For questions, contact Assistant Professor Lam Tran at [email protected].
