About this position
Postdoc in Metabolic Engineering of Thermophiles – BRIGHT, Technical University of Denmark (DTU)
This postdoctoral opening is based at BRIGHT (Novo Nordisk Foundation Biotechnology Research Institute for the Green Transition) at the Technical University of Denmark in Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark. The project focuses on metabolic engineering, synthetic biology, microbiology, and fermentation technologies for developing robust microbial cell factories and scalable bioprocesses that convert CO₂-derived feedstocks into high-volume chemicals.
The successful candidate will work in a multi-year interdisciplinary initiative spanning metabolic tools and design, strain engineering, process design, fermentation, downstream processing, multi-omics, techno-economic validation, and business development. The role is coordinated by Professor Alex Toftgaard Nielsen, and the postdoc will contribute to engineering thermophilic bacteria, improving molecular biology tools, testing engineered strains in fed-batch fermentation, running evolution experiments, and supporting teaching and supervision of BSc and MSc projects.
Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a PhD degree or equivalent. The ideal profile includes a strong background in general microbiology, fermentation technologies, and metabolic engineering, plus experience with molecular and synthetic biology, thermophilic organisms, gram-positive bacteria engineering tools, adaptive laboratory evolution, and strong communication skills. English proficiency is required.
Funding and terms: this is a salaried postdoctoral employment under the Danish collective agreement, with allowance negotiated according to DTU salary structure. The appointment is for two years, with a start date of 1 January 2027 or by mutual agreement.
How to apply: submit the online application as one PDF in English via the Apply now portal. Include a cover letter, CV, academic diplomas (MSc/PhD), and a list of publications. Deadline: 26 October 2026.
