About this position
Postdoc in Anaerobic Metabolic Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), BRiGHT (Novo Nordisk Foundation Biotechnology Research Institute for the Green Transition), in Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark.
This postdoctoral opening focuses on sustainability-driven biomanufacturing and the development of robust microbial cell factories and scalable bioprocesses that convert CO₂-derived feedstocks into high-volume chemicals. The project spans the full innovation pipeline, including metabolic tools and design, strain engineering, process design, fermentation, downstream processing, multi-omics, techno-economic validation, and business development.
The successful candidate will work in a project coordinated by Professor Alex Toftgaard Nielsen and contribute to designing and developing novel microbial systems for metabolising selected chemical substrates for biochemical production. Core tasks include setting up sensor systems for high-throughput analysis of anaerobic and aerobic bacteria, modelling anaerobic microbial communities, isolating and characterizing anaerobic organisms, collaborating with an interdisciplinary research team, publishing in high-impact journals, and preparing presentations and project deliverables.
Eligibility highlights: a PhD degree (or equivalent) is required. The ideal profile includes a strong background in microbial physiology, general and anaerobic microbiology, experience with sensor systems for remote monitoring of anaerobic microbial processes, hands-on anaerobic cultivation, and deep knowledge of anaerobic metabolism for industrial applications. Strong English skills are required, and the role includes teaching and supervision of BSc and MSc student projects.
Funding/employment: this is a three-year full-time postdoctoral position with salary and terms governed by the Danish collective agreement; salary supplements may be negotiated. No stipend amount is listed.
Deadline: 26 October 2026. Apply online with one PDF containing a cover letter, CV, academic diplomas (MSc/PhD in English), and publication list.
