About this position

TU Delft is advertising a 2-year postdoctoral position on monitoring thermally induced seismic events in the context of geothermal energy extraction. The project is funded by NWO and is embedded in the Geothermal Theme at Delft University of Technology, with collaboration with KNMI in De Bilt, the Netherlands.

The research focuses on understanding when reservoir cooling in sedimentary geothermal projects can lead to significant seismic activity. The work combines geophysical field monitoring, laboratory experiments, and numerical reservoir modelling. The postdoc will work on centroid-moment tensor inversions for small induced events, develop inversion strategies for sparse seismic data, and link low-magnitude induced seismicity to geothermal-induction theory.

Applicants should hold a PhD in Geophysics, Physics, Mathematics, Earth Sciences, or a closely related field. Strong skills in linking models to field data, understanding seismic wave fields and mechanics, and working independently in a multidisciplinary team are required. Excellent English communication and publication skills are expected. Experience with seismic processing and inversion, and with tools such as SeisSol or SPECFEM3D, is considered an advantage.

The position is temporary external finance, with a 2-year contract, 32–40 hours per week, and a salary range of €3706–€5760 under the Dutch university collective labour agreement. TU Delft also mentions relocation support, a dual career programme, and standard employment benefits.

Deadline: 30 September 2026. Apply online through the vacancy page and upload a CV and motivation letter.
