About this position

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is recruiting a Postdoc for a 3-year project on Nihilistic Violent Extremist (NVE) groups. The position is based in the Faculty of Behavioural and Movement Sciences and is part of an NWO-funded proposal.

The project combines criminology, psychology, and data science to study radical online groups, especially adolescents and young adults, and to analyze large volumes of social media data using quantitative and statistical methods. The postdoc will map the literature, identify and monitor data sources, curate and analyze data, present findings at conferences, and publish peer-reviewed articles.

You will work with Prof. dr. Jan-Willem van Prooijen, Prof. dr. Arjan Blokland, and Dr. Elanie Rodermond within an interdisciplinary team connected to the Social Psychology section and the Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement (NSCR). The environment emphasizes high-quality research, collaboration, and secure handling of sensitive data.

Eligibility highlights include a completed or soon-to-be-completed PhD in criminology, psychology, data science, or a related field; expertise in extremism, radicalization, and terrorism; strong statistics skills; experience with quantitative analysis of large-scale social media data; and excellent English communication skills.

The role is full-time (1 FTE). The salary is listed at €3,546 to €5,538 gross per month, with holiday allowance, end-of-year bonus, commuting support, and other benefits. The initial contract is for one year and may be extended for two additional years after positive evaluation.

The deadline is 24 August 2026. The targeted starting date is 1 January 2027 at the latest. Apply via the vacancy page; applications by email will not be considered.
