About this position

Wageningen University & Research is advertising a postdoctoral position in operational radar-based forest disturbance and regrowth monitoring. The project focuses on advancing near-real-time forest change monitoring using radar satellite observations, with particular attention to the RADD (Radar for Detecting Deforestation) alert system.

The successful candidate will work on methodological research and operational development using radar missions such as Sentinel-1 and NISAR. The role includes extending RADD from disturbance detection toward continuous monitoring of post-disturbance regrowth and structural recovery, as well as expanding the geographic applicability of the alerts beyond humid tropics and Europe.

The position sits within the Laboratory of Geo-information Science and Remote Sensing at WUR, in the radar remote sensing team led by Dr. Johannes Reiche. The work is embedded in an international and interdisciplinary environment, including collaboration with partners from Global Nature Watch.

Applicants should have a PhD in remote sensing, data science, forest ecology, or a related field, along with strong radar/SAR remote sensing expertise, experience with forest disturbance or recovery dynamics, reproducible data-processing workflows, strong Python skills, and excellent English. Experience with satellite time-series analysis, cloud/HPC processing, and stakeholder-facing operational monitoring is considered an advantage.

This is a paid postdoctoral appointment with a gross salary of €3,706 to €5,760 per month for a 38-hour week, plus standard WUR benefits. The contract is for two years. The work location is Wageningen, Netherlands.

Application deadline: Monday 19 October 2026. Apply via the vacancy page on the WUR website; only applications submitted through the website will be considered.
