About this position

Uppsala University is advertising a postdoc in physical geography focused on the future of the Greenland Ice Sheet. The position is based in the Department of Earth Sciences and sits within the research program Air, Water and Landscape Science (LUVAL), which connects hydrology, meteorology, environmental analysis, and physical geography.

The project is centered on glaciology, cryosphere analysis, and ice sheet modelling. The postdoc will help generate new bed height and thickness maps for the Greenland Ice Sheet and simulate its evolution up to 2300. The work uses a novel inverse approach, high-resolution satellite data, and ice flow modelling with Parallel Ice Sheet Model (PISM), with machine learning alternatives such as Instructed Glacier Model (IGM) also considered.

The role includes close collaboration with a PhD student in the same research group and with international partners at Oslo University, Mid Sweden University, the Danish Meteorological Institute, University of Liège, the University of Fairbanks, and the University of Lausanne.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in glaciology, geoscience, computer science, physics, or a related field; strong experience in numerical modelling and cryosphere analysis; advanced English; ability to work independently and in an international team. Programming in Python and knowledge of machine learning or ArcGIS are advantageous.

Employment details: 2-year temporary position, 100% employment, with 20% teaching in Earth Sciences at first- and second-cycle levels. Placement is in Uppsala, Sweden. The application deadline is 2026-09-04.

How to apply: Submit your application through Uppsala University’s recruitment system using the official application portal. Contact Ward van Pelt at [email protected] for further information.
