About this position
GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam, Germany is advertising a Doctoral researcher (PhD) position in volcano deformation hazards and interaction with hydrothermal alteration within section 2.1 “Physics of Earthquakes and Volcanoes” (Department of Geophysics).
The project is part of the ROTTnROCK working group, a synergy project funded by the European Research Council. The research combines remote sensing, volcano physics, geospatial analysis, and data science to quantify the intensity, type, and spatial gradation of hydrothermal alteration. The work includes analysis of satellite data (tristereo, radar, hyperspectral sensors), archive satellite records, drone-based sensing, computer vision workflows, point cloud matching, image correlation, structure-from-motion (SfM), morphology change detection, machine learning/classification, mineral mapping, and development of 4D digital representations of volcanoes and digital twins.
The position involves close collaboration with rock mechanics, petrology, and numerical modelling labs at partner institutes, including co-supervision, plus planning and executing field expeditions at remote and active volcanoes.
Eligibility highlights: MSc in Earth Science (e.g., Geophysics, Geology, Geography), strong remote sensing and data analysis background, experience with SAR/InSAR and multi-/hyperspectral remote sensing, interest in volcanology, ability to do fieldwork in harsh environments, and a car driving and drone flying license. Desirable skills include 3D reconstruction, SfM, point cloud analysis, machine learning, teamwork, and strong English communication.
Funding: funded doctoral position for 36 months, salary group 13 under TVöD Bund, part-time 75% (29.25 h/week), with support for computing, fieldwork, conferences/workshops, and publication charges.
