About this position
Postdoc opportunity at Wageningen University & Research in plant ecology, ecophysiology, urban greening, and nature-based solutions.
The BIO-SKIN project (Bio-Inspired Outer Surfaces to Kool, Insulate and Nurture) is developing bio-based, waste-derived, circular façade systems that integrate plant growth to keep buildings cool, improve insulation, support biodiversity, and contribute to more sustainable urban environments.
The postdoctoral researcher will study how plant-soil-insect interactions develop in shallow-soil ecosystems and translate ecological insights into design principles for next-generation green façades. The work combines fundamental and applied research, including theoretical assessments of optimal flora/fauna combinations for shading, cooling, and biodiversity, coordination of façade-panel experiments, ecological and physiological data analysis, and scientific publishing.
The position is embedded in the Biosystematics Group and the Laboratory of Entomology at Wageningen University & Research, with supervision by Casper Quist and Bregje Wertheim. The researcher will also spend one day per week with the wider BIO-SKIN team at the AMS Institute in Amsterdam and will be part of the PE&RC graduate school.
Applicants should have a PhD in plant ecology, urban ecosystems, or a related field, a strong interest in nature-based solutions for the built environment, experience with systematic literature reviews and/or meta-analysis, excellent English communication and scientific writing skills, and a proactive, interdisciplinary mindset. A C1 level of English is required.
