About this position

Wageningen University & Research is advertising a Postdoc position in the Biosystematics group within the Plant Sciences Group, focused on understanding plant immune responses against insect egg deposition. The project aims to uncover the genetic basis and molecular mechanisms behind plant defence traits that kill insect eggs, stop larvae from hatching, or reduce larval development and plant damage.

The successful candidate will work on plant immune receptor genes, their intra- and interspecific diversity, and downstream immune pathways. The role combines dry-lab bioinformatics and wet-lab work, including NGS techniques, RNAseq, plant transformation, bioinformatic analysis, and CRISPR-Cas9. The postdoc will also co-supervise two PhD students and collaborate closely with the insect team, Biosystematics colleagues, Plant Breeding researchers, and external vegetable breeding and seed companies.

Supervisors and collaborators mentioned include Dr. Nina Fatouros (Associate Professor), Dr. Klaas Bouwmeester, Dr. Robin van Velzen, and Dr. Lotte Caarls. The position is based at Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a PhD in Biology/Plant Sciences, ideally with specialization in entomology, phytopathology, microbiology, or a related area, and have experience with insect/plant-microbe interactions. Experience in both dry and wet lab work, statistical analysis of large datasets, and supervision of MSc thesis students is expected. English proficiency at C1 level is required.

Funding and terms: this is a salaried postdoctoral appointment with a gross monthly salary of €3,706–€5,760 for a 38-hour week, initially for one year with possible renewal subject to performance and financial situation. WUR also highlights benefits such as sabbatical leave, study leave, partially paid parental leave, a year-end bonus, pension, and campus sports facilities.

Application deadline: 5 October 2026. Apply via the vacancy page on the WUR website using the application button. Submit a CV and motivation letter; grades and transcripts are not required at this stage. Internal candidates are encouraged to apply before 15 September 2026.
