About this position

Utrecht University in the Netherlands is recruiting a PhD candidate for a project on predictive plant–microbiome–pathogen interactions. The work is embedded in the Plant-Microbe Interactions group within the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, and is part of the NWO Vici project ResistoBiome: Predictive microbiome modelling for resilient and sustainable potato cropping systems.

The project asks how the microbiome surrounding a plant influences whether pathogens can invade successfully, and whether disease outcomes can be predicted from microbiome composition and plant phenotypes. You will study potato plants and their microbiomes in relation to two major pathogens: Phytophthora infestans and Ralstonia solanacearum.

Research activities include large-scale potato experiments with 100 contrasting Dutch agricultural soil microbiomes, high-throughput plant phenotyping at the Netherlands Plant Eco-phenotyping Centre (NPEC), root and leaf microbiome profiling using amplicon sequencing, integrated analysis of microbiome and phenotyping datasets, and machine-learning/predictive modelling of pathogen invasion and plant resilience. The project also includes isolating candidate microbes and experimentally validating their effects on pathogen establishment and plant health.

Ideal applicants have an MSc in plant biology, microbiology, molecular biology, plant pathology, biotechnology, bioinformatics, or a related field. Experience with laboratory or plant experiments is expected, and strong interest in plant–microbe interactions, microbiome research, quantitative biology, phenotyping, and data analysis is important. English proficiency is required; experience with plant pathogens, sequencing, image-based phenotyping, R/Python, statistics, or machine learning is a plus.
