About this position
The Mijakovic lab at Chalmers SysBio is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to join the Casein Mission project, which aims to produce food-grade caseins in microbial hosts. This interdisciplinary and international group offers a supportive, collaborative, and dynamic working environment within the Department of Life Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology. The department is renowned for its research, innovation, and education focused on enabling a biobased society and improving human health, utilizing advanced computational technologies to understand biomolecules and organisms.
The research project is part of the NNF-funded Casein Mission consortium, targeting the production of food-grade caseins in microbial cell factories. The main challenge is ensuring that caseins produced in microbes are decorated with the correct post-translational modifications (PTMs), such as phosphorylations and glycosylations, which are essential for calcium binding and food functionalities. The successful candidate will be an expert in mass-spectrometry based proteomics, working alongside biochemists and microbiologists to detect and optimize casein PTMs.
Mandatory requirements include a doctoral degree or equivalent in relevant disciplines, strong written and verbal communication skills in English, and experience with mass spectrometry proteomics for detection and quantification of PTMs (phosphorylation required, glycosylation optional). Experience with molecular biology and protein structures will strengthen the application. The position involves preparing biological samples for mass spectrometry analyses, interacting with proteomics platforms, analyzing MS data, collaborating with consortium members, contributing to peer-reviewed papers and grant applications, and supervising MSc students if the opportunity arises. Teaching opportunities in undergraduate courses are also available.
The postdoctoral position is a temporary full-time employment for two years, requiring physical presence in Gothenburg throughout the contract. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date. Chalmers offers a dynamic and inspiring working environment, generous employee benefits, and support for settling in Sweden, including Swedish language courses. The university is committed to gender balance, equality, and inclusion, and actively works with initiatives such as the GENIE Initiative for gender equality and excellence.
To apply, submit your application in English as PDF files via the online application form. Include a comprehensive CV, personal letter, summary of previous research fields and key outcomes, and an outline of future goals and research focus. Incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. References will be requested after the interview. The application deadline is 15 May 2026. For questions, contact Prof. Ivan Mijakovic at [email protected].
Chalmers University of Technology is a leading institution in technology and natural sciences, with a strong commitment to scientific excellence, sustainability, and innovation.
