About this position
Technical University of Munich (TUM), through the Munich Institute of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MIRMI), is recruiting a PostDoc for Safe and Networked Control for AI-Assisted Teleoperation at the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Campus, Germany.
The project focuses on robotics, teleoperation, networked control systems, passivity-based control, human-robot interaction, and shared control. The main scientific goal is to develop a controller-agnostic safety layer for remote robotic systems operating over communication networks with latency, packet loss, and other uncertainties. Existing AI-based control policies will be integrated as modules; the emphasis is on control, safety, adaptation, and networked robotics rather than developing new foundation models.
Responsibilities include designing and validating the safety layer, handling heterogeneous inputs from human teleoperation and AI-generated policies, integrating existing AI controllers into the teleoperation framework, collaborating with industrial and academic partners, supporting research funding activities, and publishing in top robotics venues.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field. The post asks for a strong publication record in telerobotics, shared control, or human-robot interaction under network constraints, plus practical skills in C++/Python, ROS, MATLAB, and hardware such as robot arms. Excellent English is required; German is a plus. Experience with passivity-based control, energy tanks, TDPA, teleoperation, haptic interfaces, and networked control systems is advantageous.
Funding is via the TV-L collective agreement. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, with priority given to submissions received by 2026-10-18.
To apply, submit a complete application through the Airtable portal using the subject line “92MIRMIPostdoc GAP”. Required documents include a CV with at least two academic references, Bachelor’s and Master’s transcripts, and two to three representative publications or project reports if available.
