About this position

Postdoc opportunity at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Department of Applied Physics and Science Education, within the ERC-funded Cool T-ReX project.

The project develops a unique pulsed ultracold electron source with exceptionally high transverse coherence and aims to demonstrate time-resolved protein crystallography using electrons instead of X-rays on a table-top setup. The postdoc will lead the implementation of serial electron diffraction (Serial ED) on the new setup, working with protein crystals provided by collaborators and using graphene liquid cells assembled with a commercial solution.

This position is especially relevant for researchers with interests in physics, biology, materials science, chemistry, microED, protein crystallography, instrumentation development, charged particle optics, lasers and nonlinear optics, high vacuum, and high voltage.

You will join a team including two PhD candidates, the PI Julius Huijts, and experienced technicians, embedded in the larger Coherence and Quantum Technology group. The role is hands-on and interdisciplinary, with responsibility for method implementation and experimental development on a novel electron source platform.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in serial ED or microED (preferably on protein crystals), experience or strong affinity with method/instrumentation development, teamwork and communication skills, initiative, independent work organization, and excellent English. Experience with mechanical/optical design and complex optical setups is advantageous.

Funding and conditions: full-time employment for 2.5 years, salary scale 10 (€4,422–€5,760 gross per month), plus holiday allowance, year-end bonus, pension, leave, and other employee benefits. The position is based in Eindhoven, Netherlands.

Application deadline: 21 November 2026. Apply online via the vacancy portal; submit a cover letter, CV with publications and three references, and up to five best publications. Applications by email or post will not be processed.
