About this position

KTH Royal Institute of Technology is offering a 2-year postdoctoral position in Machine Learning-based Electro-Chemo-Mechanical Estimation and Control of Solid-State Batteries, hosted by the Department of Decision and Control Systems within EECS. The project is part of the Swedish governmental battery initiative COMPEL, which supports excellence in battery research and education for the transport sector, and sits within a broader coordinated effort on composite solid-state batteries involving seven postdoctoral positions across the battery value chain.

The research focuses on developing reduced-order electro-chemo-mechanical models, state estimation methods, and predictive control strategies for solid-state batteries. A key goal is to understand how charging protocols, temperature, and mechanical loading affect battery performance, degradation, and lifetime. The work combines physics-based modelling with machine learning to support parameter estimation, degradation prediction, and analysis of electrochemical and structural characterization data. The project also includes X-ray CT image reconstruction, segmentation, and quantitative microstructure analysis, with a long-term aim of enabling health-aware battery management and optimized charging strategies.

This opportunity is well suited to candidates with a background in control engineering, electrical engineering, applied mathematics, engineering physics, or a related field, and to those interested in batteries, estimation, optimization, and machine learning. Strong English skills are required. The ad also highlights experience with solid-state batteries or electrochemical system modelling/control as a merit, along with independence, innovation, teamwork, and collaborative skills.
