About this position

Chalmers University of Technology is offering a postdoctoral position in the synthesis and crystal growth of molecular conductors. The project is based in Daniel Weber’s group in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, with close interaction with Martin Rahm’s computational group. The research explores stacked oxocarbon-ring salts that may behave as one-dimensional metals, and potentially superconductors, according to recent calculations. The experimental aim is to control composition, oxidation state, and synthesis route in order to grow single crystals, resolve structure–property questions, and expand the materials family.

The project is strongly experimental and centered on air-sensitive preparative chemistry, crystal growth of molecular or ionic solids, and advanced characterization. You will work with gloveboxes, Schlenk lines, single-crystal and powder diffraction, variable-temperature diffraction, total scattering, electron transport, magnetometry, spectroscopy, and related techniques. The position is embedded in a collaborative environment with access to Chalmers facilities and external partners for synchrotron, neutron, transport, EPR, magnetometry, and solid-state NMR measurements.

Eligible applicants must hold a PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, or Physics by the time of the employment decision. Strong practical experience with new compound synthesis, air- and moisture-sensitive chemistry, crystal growth, and diffraction is expected. Familiarity with molecular conductors, radical salts, charge-transfer salts, oxocarbon chemistry, and characterization of air-sensitive samples is highly relevant. Excellent English communication skills are required.

The appointment is full-time and temporary for two years, with a possible extension to three years. This is a salaried employment, not a scholarship: the monthly salary is 42,500 SEK, with occupational pension, paid holiday, parental leave, and full Swedish social insurance. The position is based in Gothenburg, Sweden, and the expected start is as soon as possible. The application deadline is 15 October 2026.

Applicants must have a PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science or Physics, and this requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made. It is highly meritorious if the doctoral degree was obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline. The ideal candidate has made new compounds themselves and is experienced with gloveboxes, Schlenk lines, single-crystal and powder diffractometers, air- and moisture-sensitive preparative chemistry, crystal growth of molecular or ionic solids, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder diffraction methods such as indexing, Pawley and Rietveld refinement, and ideally total scattering and pair distribution function analysis. Experience with molecular conductors, radical or charge-transfer salts, oxocarbon electrode chemistry, synchrotron and neutron beamtimes, magnetometry, conductivity, EPR or solid-state NMR on air-sensitive samples, and co-authorship in studies combining experiments and theory is desirable. Excellent spoken and written English is required.
