About this position

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate for a project on theory-in-the-loop autonomous experiments for materials-by-design. The work sits in the Nanomaterials Theory Institute within the Theory and Computation Section at the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS), Physical Sciences Directorate, and involves close collaboration with Soumendu Bagchi and P. Ganesh.

The research combines condensed-matter physics, materials science, AI/ML, multiscale and multifidelity simulation, and high-performance computing. The successful candidate will help develop physics-informed surrogate models, inverse-design workflows, and agentic AI tools that can guide autonomous synthesis and characterization experiments in real time. Target applications include discovery of novel quantum materials and microelectronic materials.

Eligibility: applicants must hold a PhD in condensed matter physics, materials science, chemistry, physics, or a closely related field, completed within the last five years. Preferred experience includes advanced physics-informed AI, machine learning for materials discovery, HPC workflows, and a strong publication record.

Funding and appointment: this is a postdoctoral appointment for up to 24 months, with possible extension depending on performance and funding availability. ORNL also notes competitive pay and benefits.

Application: apply via the ORNL careers portal. Three letters of reference are required and may be uploaded or emailed to [email protected]. The posting states it will remain open for a minimum of 5 days and then close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.
