About this position
Postdoctoral position at the University of Amsterdam in a multi-method cross-linguistic project on the typology of postverbal negation. The project sits at the intersection of linguistics, cognitive science, and cross-linguistic psycholinguistics, and investigates why many languages prefer early negation rather than late negation.
You will work with a small international team, including the PIs Eva van Lier and Marieke Schouwstra, another part-time postdoctoral researcher, a PhD candidate, and an external specialist. The research combines qualitative and quantitative typological analysis, typological database building, artificial language learning, EEG, and field-based experiments. A particular focus is on languages of Papua, South America, and sub-Saharan Africa, including work with speakers of Cha’palaa (Ecuador).
The position is a paid postdoc appointment, initially for one year with the possibility of a two-year extension after positive evaluation. Salary is between €3,706 and €5,760 gross per month for full-time employment, plus holiday allowance and year-end bonus.
Applicants should hold a PhD in a relevant field such as morpho-syntactic or semantic typology, or cross-linguistic psycholinguistics. Experience with non-WEIRD languages, especially in South America, Papua, and/or sub-Saharan Africa, is required, along with experience in qualitative and quantitative cross-linguistic methods, interdisciplinary collaboration, and field-based experimental work. Strong academic English is required; Spanish is optional.
The vacancy closes on 8 November 2026. The preferred starting date is 1 March 2027. Apply via the vacancy page on the UvA careers website.
