About this position

Postdoctoral position at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, focused on X-ray and neutron characterization of metallic materials for additive manufacturing (AM), welding, and heat treatment.

The project centers on in-situ and ex-situ synchrotron and neutron studies using the custom-built experimental environment at the Swedish beamline at PETRA III, beamline P21.2. The work will investigate how metals respond to rapid thermal cycles during electron-beam and laser-based processing, with attention to phase transformations, melt-pool dynamics, solidification, microstructure evolution, and resulting mechanical properties.

The postdoc will further develop the methodology for this setup, collaborate with academic and industrial partners, and combine large-scale facility experiments with complementary characterization techniques such as SEM and XRD. The role is aimed at advancing sustainable materials processing and circular material flows.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in materials science or a closely related area is required; strong experience in synchrotron/neutron characterization (e.g. diffraction, WAXS, SAXS, ND, SANS, imaging) is expected; excellent English and strong initiative, analytical ability, and collaboration skills are important. Recent PhD completion within three years is preferred.

Funding/employment: temporary full-time postdoctoral appointment for up to two years.

A doctoral degree or equivalent foreign degree in materials science or a closely related area by the employment decision date; research experience in materials characterization, especially synchrotron light and neutron characterization such as diffraction, small-angle scattering (WAXS, SAXS, ND, SANS) and imaging, supported by journal publications and international conference presentations; excellent spoken and written English; self-motivation, initiative, project-running ability, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, responsibility, and collaboration/leadership skills. Preferred: PhD obtained within the last three years, extensive data analysis experience for synchrotron or neutron characterization of metallic materials, experience with electron-beam and/or laser processing, characterization of mechanical behavior, phase transformations or precipitates, lab-scale characterization such as SEM and XRD, and awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues with focus on gender equality.
