About this position

Leiden University’s Leiden Institute of Physics (LION), in collaboration with the Leiden Institute of Chemistry, is offering a full-time postdoctoral research position focused on graphene edge sensors for single-molecule detection and biopolymer sequencing. The project combines chemistry and physics approaches to build scalable and tunable device architectures based on electron tunneling between graphene electrode edges.

The successful candidate will join a small, highly collaborative team that includes PhD students and staff, working in a research environment with state-of-the-art preparation and measurement facilities, low-vibration lab space, and strong support from mechanical and electronic workshops. The work includes designing and optimizing graphene edge-to-edge tunneling devices, developing electronic signal detection methods, and integrating microfluidic structures with the tunneling platform. The postdoc will also take the lead in scientific publications and may contribute to patent applications.

Applicants should have a PhD in Condensed Matter Physics, Nanoscience, Nanotechnology, or Electrical Engineering, together with documented expertise in nanofabrication, nanoscience, low-current device electronics, or graphene/2D-materials devices. Experience with tunneling devices, especially in liquid environments, is an asset. The position is best suited to researchers with several scientific publications, strong experimental experience, and at least three first-author papers, plus excellent English communication skills, strong independence, and the ability to work well in a team.

The appointment is for up to two years, initially one year and extendable after positive evaluation. The salary ranges from €3,546 to €5,538 gross per month (scale 10 under the Dutch universities collective agreement), with holiday allowance, end-of-year bonus, training, career development, commuting reimbursement, and potential tax advantages for international hires. The vacancy is located in Leiden, the Netherlands, at the Bio Science Park within Leiden University’s Faculty of Science.

Candidates must live and be officially registered in the Netherlands or be willing to relocate at the start; a C1 level of Dutch proficiency is expected for international staff, and a basic teaching qualification (BKO) must be obtained within two years if required.
