About this position

Empa, the Swiss research institution in the ETH Domain, is offering a postdoc position in its Laboratory for Advanced Fibers in St. Gallen. The project sits at the intersection of chemistry, polymer science, materials engineering, and electrochemistry, with a strong application focus on improving lithium-ion battery lifetime.

The successful candidate will help develop melt-spun liquid/gel-core fibers with polyolefin sheaths and functionalized hydrophobic cores designed to selectively scavenge transition metal ions and other degradation products from batteries. The research aims to mitigate cell damage and prolong battery life through innovative fiber-based scavenger systems.

Key tasks include developing melt-spun fiber architectures, exploring selective scavenger systems for transition metal ions and HF, and evaluating chelating ligands, reactive nanoparticles, and additives. The role also involves optimizing melt-spinning, uniaxial stretching, and post-treatment steps to control sheath porosity and ion diffusion. In addition, the postdoc will contribute to acquisition of research grants, scientific publication writing, and supervision of students and interns.

The position is suitable for candidates with a PhD in chemistry or a closely related field such as polymer science or materials science. Experience in polymer–ion interactions, chelation chemistry, or battery materials is beneficial. The role requires strong English skills; German is an advantage. Empa offers an international and highly stimulating research environment with excellent infrastructure for fiber processing, polymer analysis, and electrochemical testing.

The appointment is based at Empa in St. Gallen and is limited to two years. The starting date is as soon as possible or by mutual agreement. Interested applicants must apply through the online job portal and include a motivation letter, CV, certificates, diplomas, and the contact details of two reference persons.
