About this position
Empa, a leading research institution within the ETH Domain, is offering a fully funded PhD position in its Laboratory Materials for Energy Conversion. The project centers on the investigation of lithium- and sodium-based solid-state batteries using advanced muon-based bulk and interface characterization techniques. The primary goal is to achieve a mechanistic understanding of electrochemical performance, focusing on ion distribution, transport, and degradation processes during battery operation.
Key research questions include the formation of Li/Na concentration gradients during charge/discharge cycles, the evolution of interphases, and degradation mechanisms such as ageing, material dissolution (leaching), and transition-metal migration. Muon-based methods will be employed to probe depth-resolved properties, providing insights into buried interfaces and bulk transport phenomena that are challenging to access with conventional techniques.
The successful candidate will conduct electrochemical and structural characterization of battery materials and cells, design and execute experiments to identify reaction pathways and degradation mechanisms, and analyze complex datasets to link microscopic processes with macroscopic battery performance. Collaboration with project partners will support the development and testing of innovative materials and cell concepts.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in chemistry, materials science, or a related field. Experience in electrochemistry or batteries is advantageous, and excellent English skills are required. The PhD student will be enrolled in the doctoral program in Electrical Engineering at ETH Zurich and will benefit from participation in the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) Muoniverse, which connects over 30 research groups and offers a structured research school with training, exchange opportunities, and career development.
Empa’s laboratories in Dübendorf provide access to state-of-the-art battery research infrastructure, including gloveboxes, furnaces, spectroscopy, microscopy, and extensive electrochemical testing facilities. The project is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, ensuring full financial support for the PhD position.
