About this position

Postdoctoral position in Applied Geochemistry at Luleå University of Technology in Sweden. The project sits at the intersection of geochemistry, environmental science, microbiology, and algal biotechnology, with a strong focus on microalgae-based treatment of mine-impacted waters and the recovery of valuable metals and critical raw materials.

The research examines how microalgae interact with dissolved and particle-bound metals under different geochemical conditions. Topics include metal mobility, algal growth and ecophysiology, biosorption and uptake, trace-element analysis, environmental mineralogy, and the influence of pH, nutrients, mineral particles, and bioash additions. The work combines laboratory and pilot-scale cultivation experiments with geochemical and mineralogical analyses.

The postdoc will cultivate selected microalgae, test recycled bio ashes as nutrient or growth-promoting inputs, optimize exposure and cultivation conditions, quantify metal uptake, assess treatment performance over time, and investigate harvesting and characterization of metal-enriched biomass. The broader aim is to develop a scalable micro-algae-based treatment system that improves water quality and supports recovery of valuable elements such as rare earth elements.

Eligibility requires a PhD or equivalent in applied geochemistry, biogeochemistry, microbiology, algal biotechnology, environmental sciences, Earth sciences, or a related area. Applicants should have documented experience with microalgae cultivation and controlled algal experiments. Helpful additional experience includes mine-water or wastewater treatment, photobioreactors, biomass harvesting, geochemical/mineralogical methods, and multivariate statistical analysis. Strong English communication skills and willingness to do fieldwork across Sweden are also expected.

The position is for two years with placement in Luleå. The application deadline is 2026-10-12. Apply online and include a CV, personal letter, and verified diplomas. Applications must be written in English or Swedish and reference number 4830-2026 should be used.

A doctoral degree awarded no more than three years before the application deadline is considered a useful qualification, though earlier degrees may be accepted with special grounds. Required experience includes cultivating microalgae and planning and conducting controlled algal experiments. Advantageous experience includes metal mobility, algal ecophysiology, metal uptake or biosorption, mine-water or wastewater treatment, photobioreactors or scale-up of algal cultures, biomass harvesting and characterization, trace-element analysis, geochemical or mineralogical methods, and statistical analysis of multivariate experimental data. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams, excellent English communication skills, and willingness to participate in fieldwork across Sweden are expected.

How to apply

Apply through the online application button on the job page. Submit a CV, personal letter, and copies of verified diplomas from high school and university. Applications must be written in English or Swedish and marked with reference number 4830-2026.
