About this position

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Plant-Soil Interactions and Coastal Biogeochemistry within the Environmental Sciences Division. The project is part of the interdisciplinary Exploring Gulf Region Ecosystem Transitions (EGRET) collaboration, which studies disturbance-driven ecosystem transitions across the U.S. Gulf Coast using field observations, laboratory mesocosms, AI/ML, remote sensing, process-based modeling, and advanced analytical techniques.

The postdoctoral researcher will investigate how plant traits and soil properties influence resilience or vulnerability to disturbance in coastal wetlands. Research topics include belowground root traits, plant-microbe-soil interactions, physical and chemical soil properties, organo-mineral associations, inundation gradients, and salinity gradients. The role combines field campaigns, laboratory experiments, high-throughput phenotyping, and geochemical/microbial measurements.

Key duties include collecting plant material, soil cores, and soil water from coastal wetlands; leading mesocosm experiments on plant-soil responses to simulated disturbance; and working with instruments and tools such as Picarro gas analyzers, Rhizovision Explorer, Shimadzu TOC-L, ICP-MS/OES, and Aqualog. The researcher will collaborate with modelers and empiricists across multiple institutions, present findings at conferences, and publish peer-reviewed manuscripts.

Eligibility: applicants must hold a PhD in Earth and Environmental Sciences, Ecology, Biosciences, Botany, Geosciences, or a related field, completed within the last five years or expected soon. Strong independent research experience, experimental design skills, data analysis ability, and excellent communication skills are required. Preferred experience includes environmental sample characterization, imaging/phenotyping data integration, reproducible analysis in R, interdisciplinary science, and field work.
