About this position
Postdoctoral researcher position in materials synthesis and magnetocaloric characterization at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), within the BMFTR-funded collaborative project GarliQ – Green Advanced Refrigerants: Light-element oxides & intermetallics for Quantum cooling.
The research group for the Topology of Correlated Systems at the TUM Center for Quantum Engineering (ZQE) and the Department of Physics is seeking a postdoc to work on new magnetocaloric materials for use as cooling media in adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration (ADR) systems in the millikelvin range. The project is carried out in close collaboration with the industrial partner kiutra GmbH.
Research topics and tasks: solid-state synthesis and melt crystal growth of oxide and intermetallic compounds; structural characterization by X-ray diffraction and related methods; low-temperature magnetic and thermodynamic measurements using standard and dilution refrigerator cryostats; experiments at neutron and synchrotron sources where applicable; determination of magnetocaloric parameters such as isothermal entropy change and adiabatic temperature change; scale-up of promising synthesis routes for integration into ADR cooling systems; supervision of PhD students, master’s students, and student assistants; writing journal publications and presenting results at conferences.
Eligibility highlights: completed doctorate in physics, materials science, chemistry, or a related field; strong experience in synthesis of inorganic solids; knowledge of powder X-ray diffraction, Laue diffraction, microscopy, magnetometry, susceptibility, and heat-capacity measurements; experience with crystal growth facilities and/or cryostats; strong publication record in solid-state physics or materials science; excellent English; German is an advantage.
Funding and contract: full-time position, initially limited to 3 years, remunerated according to TV-L. The post is part of a BMFTR-funded project.
Application deadline: 7 November 2026. Apply by email with CV, publication list, certificates, contact details for two references, and a short motivation letter to [email protected]. Questions can also be directed to Dr. Andreas Bauer.
