About this position
The University of Twente’s Faculty of Engineering Technology is offering a postdoc position within the Engineering Dynamics / Dynamics based Maintenance group (Department MS3) in the Netherlands. The project, “Scale-up PIC based sensing (PhotonDelta FBG Sensing)”, focuses on a key challenge in photonic integrated circuit (PIC) based sensing: temperature compensation for high-accuracy operation.
The research targets the development of a Physics-Informed Machine Learning approach that combines physics-based insight with data-driven modeling. The goal is to improve robustness, explainability, and computational efficiency compared with conventional pure physics models or purely data-driven approaches. The project will address temperature dependence in complex photonic circuitry, including nonlinear thermal responses, unit-specific behavior, and variations introduced by materials, manufacturing, and assembly.
The work includes both modelling and experiments. On the modeling side, the project will identify the main physical relations between temperature and photonic circuitry and investigate sources of variation and uncertainty. On the experimental side, the postdoc will work closely with industrial partner PhotonFirst to quantify model parameters and their variations, providing the data needed to build and validate the proposed Physics-Informed Machine Learning framework.
The successful candidate must hold a PhD degree and preferably have a background in mechanical engineering or a related area. Experience in photonics and an affinity for data-driven methods are considered a plus. Strong spoken and written English and the ability to work collaboratively in a team are required.
The position is offered as a full-time temporary postdoc appointment for 12 months, with a possible 6-month extension depending on project funding. The salary ranges from €4,422 to €5,760 gross per month, depending on experience and qualifications. Additional benefits include an 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% year-end bonus, pension scheme, and access to professional and personal development opportunities.
