About this position

PhD opening in Metaoptics for Space Applications at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), in collaboration with SRON Space Research Organisation Netherlands.

The project is part of the INTERPRETER initiative and focuses on next-generation compact hyperspectral spectropolarimetric cameras. The research aims to develop detector-integrated photonic crystal filter arrays for satellite-based aerosol monitoring, climate research, environmental monitoring, and industrial sensing.

Research tasks include the design and manufacturing of photonic crystals, detector integration, and optical testing. The work is strongly rooted in nanooptics, photonics, hyperspectral imaging, computational imaging, and space applications, with possible links to semiconductor devices and optoelectronics.

Applicants should hold a strong Master's degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Photonics, Nanotechnology, Engineering, or a related field. Helpful experience includes optical characterization, nanofabrication, inverse design, imaging systems, or detector technology. Strong analytical skills, problem-solving ability, and excellent English proficiency are expected.

The position is a 4-year PhD employment at TU Delft, with salary from €3059 to €3881 gross per month plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus. The candidate will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School and may work partly with SRON in the Netherlands.

Apply online by 30 August 2026. Required documents include a CV, cover letter, academic transcripts, publications or writing samples, and proof of English proficiency if available.
