About this position

Argonne National Laboratory is hiring a Postdoctoral Appointee in Quantum Magnetometry for High-Energy Physics based in Lemont, Illinois, USA.

The project sits at the intersection of physics, materials science, quantum information science, and electrical engineering. The successful candidate will work with the High Energy Physics (HEP) Division in collaboration with the Materials Science Division (MSD) and Q-NEXT to develop and optimize nitrogen-vacancy (NV) diamond quantum magnetometry for precision electromagnetic field mapping in high-energy physics experiments.

Research themes include detector R&D, diamond membrane quantum sensors, sensor synthesis and characterization, microelectronic and photonic integration, laboratory and operational testbed validation, and scalable field-ready modules for future experiments. Relevant interests include condensed matter and materials physics, spin and detector physics, device synthesis, quantum materials, optics, photonics, spectroscopy, nanofabrication, microwave engineering, detector setups, electronics, NMR, and programming for data analysis and system modeling.

Eligibility: applicants should have a recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD (within the last 0-5 years) in Physics, Astronomy, or Quantum Engineering. Strong analytical skills, troubleshooting ability, scientific writing and presentation skills, and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team are required.

Application materials: CV/resume with publications and presentations, research statement, unofficial PhD transcripts, and PhD diploma if already awarded. Three letters of recommendation should be sent to [email protected].

Deadline: applications will receive full consideration by 2026-10-01; the position remains open until filled. The posting also lists an expected hiring range of $72,879-$121,465 plus comprehensive benefits.
