About this position

Argonne National Laboratory’s Materials Science Division is inviting applications for a postdoctoral appointment in terahertz cavity antiferromagnonics. The project sits at the intersection of physics, materials science, and electrical engineering, with a strong emphasis on terahertz resonators, antiferromagnetic spin excitations, cavity spintronics, and coherent light-matter interaction.

The successful candidate will work on developing terahertz cavity-magnonics platforms based on low-damping antiferromagnetic oxides. Research tasks include designing, simulating, fabricating, and characterizing terahertz coplanar resonators; setting up terahertz and optical free-space experiments; growing epitaxial antiferromagnetic oxide thin films such as α-Fe2O3, Cr2O3, and NiO; and measuring cavity coupling with antiferromagnetic magnon modes in a cryogenic superconducting electromagnet.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Physics, AMO Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science Engineering, or a closely related field. Experience in terahertz generation/characterization, free-space optical experiments, antiferromagnetic spintronics, or cavity spintronics is required. Strong programming and simulation skills in Python, COMSOL, or HFSS are expected. Preferred background includes microwave circuit design, terahertz optics, near-field resonators, cryogenic measurements, superconducting magnets, hybrid dynamic systems, and thin-film growth/characterization.

Funding: this is a full-time postdoctoral role with an expected salary range of $72,879 to $121,465, plus comprehensive benefits.

Application: apply online through the Argonne Workday posting. No deadline was stated in the post.
