About this position

Argonne National Laboratory is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Appointee in time-resolved spectroscopy instrumentation within the Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics Group in the Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division, in collaboration with the Time-Resolved Research Group at the Advanced Photon Source (APS).

This position is centered on developing and applying new measurement capabilities to study chemical reactivity in water droplets using time-resolved optical spectroscopy and X-ray spectroscopy. The successful candidate will help establish an innovative approach for investigating solution-phase chemistry with high temporal resolution.

Core work includes designing, constructing, testing, and benchmarking experimental instrumentation; developing laser optical systems and excitation strategies for droplet-based sample delivery; performing time-resolved X-ray measurements at Sector 25 of APS; and incorporating optical transient-absorption measurements where appropriate. The role also involves data analysis, interpretation, and communication of results through publications, presentations, and technical reports.

Eligibility highlights include a recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD (within the last 0–5 years) in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related field, plus experience with experimental instrumentation and Class 4 laser systems. Strong independent research ability, teamwork, and communication skills are emphasized.

This is a full-time, long-term fixed-term postdoctoral appointment in the United States. The expected hiring range is $72,879–$121,465, and comprehensive benefits are included. Applications are submitted in Workday with a CV/resume, cover letter, and three references.
