Postdoctoral Associate in Critical Minerals Governance and Policy at Duke University
The Critical Minerals Hub at Duke University is inviting applications for a full-time postdoctoral associate to conduct cutting-edge research in critical minerals governance, with a strong emphasis on law, policy, social science research, and interdisciplinary methods. The position is based in Durham, North Carolina, at the Nicholas School of the Environment.
The successful candidate will work with faculty affiliated with the Hub’s policy research taskforce and will contribute to collaborative research at the nexus of multiple disciplines. Research topics may include critical minerals governance and law, supply chains from local to transnational and global scales, national security and critical minerals governance, and principles for mitigating environmental and social impacts from mining while promoting local benefits.
This is a postdoctoral opening for candidates with a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in the social sciences or a related field such as public policy, political ecology, law, geography, or another relevant discipline. Applicants should have training in both qualitative and quantitative methods, including field research, and be able to communicate how their prior work connects to the critical minerals theme. Strong academic performance, excellent scientific writing, fluency in English, and the ability to thrive in a collaborative multidisciplinary environment are emphasized.
Responsibilities include original applied and fundamental research, assisting with proposals for external funding, documenting findings in reports and refereed journals, co-leading and supporting Hub activities, mentoring students and trainees, and contributing to education and Bass Connections activities. The appointment is initially for one year with the possibility of extension, and salary is commensurate with experience and postdoctoral standards.
