About this position
Boston University’s Institute for Global Sustainability is hiring a Postdoctoral Associate for the Clean Energy and Environment Legacy Transition (CELT) Initiative, a partnership involving Boston University, UMass Lowell, and the government of Massachusetts.
The role sits at the intersection of energy systems, public health, environmental sustainability, energy affordability, and climate/health equity. The postdoc will conduct quantitative research on two main themes: (1) health impacts of energy systems through air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, extreme heat, and environmental inequities; and (2) energy affordability dynamics, including cost structures, clean energy adoption, electricity markets, and socioeconomic factors.
Research tasks include analyzing large environmental, health, demographic, emissions, energy, utility, socioeconomic, and market datasets; applying advanced statistical and computational methods; integrating data from monitoring networks, satellite observations, health surveillance systems, energy models, utility systems, and geospatial databases; and producing manuscripts, technical reports, policy briefs, and presentations.
Eligibility highlights: a PhD in Public Health, Environmental Health, Epidemiology, Environmental Science, Data Science, Statistics, Economics, Engineering, Energy Systems, Applied Mathematics, Geography, Computer Science, or a closely related quantitative field; strong Python/R programming; experience with statistical analysis, epidemiology, machine learning, predictive modeling, reproducible research, and scientific communication. Preferred experience includes energy policy, energy justice, environmental epidemiology, exposure assessment, GIS/spatial analysis, cloud/HPC, and environmental justice/community-based research.

Required experience includes quantitative research with large and complex datasets, strong programming skills in Python, R, or equivalent software, and experience with statistical analysis, epidemiological methods, machine learning, predictive modeling, or other advanced quantitative techniques.
