About this position

Duke University’s Social Science Research Institute is recruiting a Postdoctoral Associate for the Human-AI Research Pipeline (HARP), an interdisciplinary research program within Duke’s Society-Centered AI Initiative.

The postdoc will help build research infrastructure and lead initial studies on how artificial intelligence affects students’ cognition, learning, well-being, social experiences, emotional regulation, group collaboration, and decision-making. The role is especially suited to researchers interested in human-AI interaction, social cognition, computational social science, neuroscience, and multimodal human-subjects research.

Research methods include EEG, eye-tracking, physiology, experience sampling, qualitative focus groups, participatory design, and novel computational measures. The postdoc will also contribute to developing AI-use measurement techniques, maintaining protocols and data resources, and producing manuscripts, presentations, reports, and grant-related materials.

Mentorship will come primarily from Dr. Jana Schaich Borg, with close collaboration from Dr. Rick Hoyle and Dr. Christopher Bail, plus other Duke PIs involved in HARP. The position includes opportunities to work with students through the HARP Student Fellows program and to mentor undergraduate and graduate researchers.

Eligibility highlights: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in neuroscience, psychology, computational social science, or a related field completed before the start date; experience with experimental, quantitative, computational, or mixed-methods human-subjects research; experience with EEG, physiology, eye-tracking, or related wearable measures; strong statistics and programming skills; and evidence of scholarly productivity.

Location: Durham, North Carolina, United States. Work arrangement: on-site only. Salary: $65,000 plus benefits. Start date: as soon as a suitable candidate is ready to begin / anticipated Nov. 1, 2026. Review: begins immediately and continues until filled.
